Where to begin: A starter list for budding jewelers

Are you interested in creating your own unique jewelry pieces but feel like you don't know where to begin? In this blog post, we will explore the core tools you need to start making your own jewelry.

1. Pliers: The Artisan's Helping Hands

Pliers are the unsung heroes of jewelry making, offering precision and control. Invest in a set that includes chain-nose pliers for detailed work, round-nose pliers for shaping wire, and flat-nose pliers for gripping and bending.

2. Wire Cutters: Snipping to Perfection

A good pair of wire cutters is indispensable. They allow you to precisely cut through various gauges of wire, ensuring clean edges for your creations. Look for a quality pair that feels comfortable in your hands.

3. Jewelry Hammer: Forging Your Signature

If you plan to work with metals, a jewelry hammer is essential for shaping and texturing. It's a versatile tool that adds character and uniqueness to your metalwork. A chasing hammer and a rubber or rawhide hammer is a great place to start.

4. Torch: Igniting Your Creative Potential

You can unlock so many creative designs once you get into soldering! Having a great torch is awesome, but you don't need the fanciest torch right away. Many jewelers (myself included) started off by using a small crembrule torch from our local hardware store.

10. Storage and Organization 

Lastly, don't forget about storage and organization. Invest in small containers, bead organizers, and jewelry trays to keep your tools and materials organized. This will save you time and frustration when searching for specific items.

1. You don't need ALL the fancy tools right away. Sure, having all the right tools definitely helps get the job done. But tools can be pricey and the cost will add up. Start with some of the basics (like what we've listed above). You can slowly build up your tool collection over time.

2. There's more than one way to do everything! Just because an online video shows one way of doing something, that does not mean that is the only correct way. Experiment and find what works best for you.
